A healthy way to success! how the mind-body factor plays a key role in our life’s achievements

The benefits of physical exercise and healthy eating are galore. We subconsciously acknowledge this, however, don’t value it as much as other essentials in our life.

How can one inculcate healthy habits to maintain good cognitive and physical function?

Lets begin with this question, what is a good life?

Based on my experience and discussions with various coaches, It’s a combination of health, wealth, love, happiness and learning how to control your environment. You truly are successful when you’re healthy, well fed, have people who love you and, when you can afford things you like.

Success is not just owning material possessions like a house, car etc, it certainly is an accomplishment to buy your first car and house, however, if you’re not physically able, your chances to sustain all these possessions become limited.

Why is it important to exercise and stay fit?

Each time we do a particular activity, we only do it because there is value in it. For example, we eat ’cause food gives us energy. We work ’cause working gives us creative and financial indemnity. Similarly exercise has value and must be done to harness the benefits associated with it.

When you work out or stay active on a regular basis, it’s not just a coincidence that you feel less stressed out, less anxious, and generally happier.

  1. It releases Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins, the quartet of happy chemicals responsible for our happiness. These chemicals are neurotransmitters in the brain necessary for feelings of pleasure and happiness.
  2. It de-stresses you- your heart rate increases which increases your breathing. This makes sure that more oxygen is absorbed into your blood and your brain gets adequate supply of the same. This leads to more energy.
  3. Being in a positive state has significant impact on our motivation, productivity, and wellbeing. No sane person would be opposed to having higher levels in those areas.
  4. Each time we postpone things or doubt our ability to do something, it is generally due to lack of enthusiasm which is linked to low levels of leptin.Believe in yourself. There is nothing you can’t do in this world. There is nothing you can’t be in this world. There is nothing which is impossible in this world. It is your response to situations in life which decides your fate.

How does nutrition play an important role in our day to day lives?

We tend to reward ourselves with food every time we are happy and, each time there is a setback or trauma we go through, we tend to compensate that with food as well. This must change. We are not animals who need to be rewarded with food. Happiness does not equal food. Sadness does not fade away with a full stomach.

Let me tell you a little secret today. No one healthy has ever had issues with not eating. It has always been the overeating which causes all the problems. As we grow older and tend to change from a physical and hormone perspective, our body requires less food. I have already discussed a protocol which is for all those people who want to indulge in the good life and stay fit at the same time. Its called intermittent fasting. You can read it here in case you missed it.

Now you can stop worrying about eating every few hours and still stay healthy and maintain good cognitive function. How does it work? Well, when we don’t eat for let say more than 10-11 hours, our body gets into fasting and starts to tap into stored energy, glucose and fat, thus its capacity to burn that stubborn fat is higher vs when you eat every few hours.

Another important factor which helps when we fast is, it boosts Growth Hormone levels in several ways.

How does Growth Hormone help- first, It is a hormone secreted by our pituitary gland

  1. It helps with cell reproduction
  2. Promotes physical growth.(when you’re growing up)
  3. It slows the process of ageing.
  4. Promotes an increase in muscle mass and a decrease in body fat.

As we age, GH levels fall. During the same time span, muscle mass declines and body fat increases. So, this one protocol can help boost GH up to 5 times than normal. In other words, it is a protocol that keeps you closest to the fountain of youth!

Another common mistake we make is we focus a lot on grains and stay away from fats. If you go back to the paleolithic age, caveman never ate grains. Why? ’cause there was no farming. Food could be obtained only by hunting and gathering.

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Lean meats, especially grass-fed animals or wild game
  • Fish, especially those rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Oils from fruits and nuts, such as olive oil or walnut oil

Farming introduced dairy, grains and legumes as additional staples in the human diet. This change in diet altered the body’s natural mechanism which led to overeating resulting in various lifestyle diseases, e.g. obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure etc. Our body functions better on protein and fats vs grains. Each time we eat grains or sugary food, we get a quick insulin response. The insulin opens the cells to absorb the food. The glucose from the grains first gets absorbed by the liver and then by the muscles, the remaining spills over for use by our body as energy. Now, if your diet is rich in grains, there will be a constant supply of glucose which will spill over for use as energy and the body will only be able to utilize so much as required. Hence the remaining glucose will get stored as fat. This versus a diet rich in fats is recommended and beneficial as the body functions better on fat as fuel vs glucose as fuel. Fat is more calorie dense, which means that one gram of fat has 9 calories vs 4 calories from one gram of grains. You see the difference. You get more energy from one unit of food from fat vs grains. Over and above, fat slows digestion and keeps you full for a long time.

Additional things you could do to win the day and lead a happy and successful life.

  1. Winning the first hour- The first hour of the day and why is it important? it’s not called awakening just like that. The happy chemicals are most active during the first hour of the day. Do at least two things which you’re passionate about. Build that skill. Whether it’s a workout or a hobby or just meditation. Make sure you use the first hour to work on yourself and then start with your core routine.
  2. Journaling- I find this very effective and have been practicing it for a very long time. I know successful people and coaches who swear by this habit. Start with planning your day and graduate to weekly planning. Once you become better with this, start to plan your months and then progress to quarterly planning- Setting periodic goals- personal, professional and financial are extremely important. A life without goals is a life without purpose.
  3. Reading- I don’t have to stress on the benefits of reading. Knowledge precedes success. Your mind must receive a constant supply of information in the form of data, facts, fiction, etc to remain active and develop further.
  4. Record significant achievements in your life. This practice helps to remind you about your value and how important you are in this universe.
  5. Record each time you fail. This is the best method to build a learning culture within yourself. It teaches you about the opportunity you created for yourself, however, could not execute it as desired. Assessing the reason behind your failure will teach you and help you to become better the next time you attempt doing things of similar nature.
  6. Write a eulogy- Who will die when you cry- this should be your goal. You came crying into this world while everyone else was smiling. You want to go smiling and make sure people around you cry. Find your purpose in life. How do you want to be remembered?  Connect with your mortality.

Let me leave you with something which inspired me tremendously when I was going through a low phase in life.

“A young man asked Socrates the secret to success. Socrates told the young man to meet him near the river the next morning. They met and Socrates asked the young man to walk with him toward the river. When the water got up to their necks, Socrates took the young man by surprise and pushed him under the water. The boy struggled to get out but Socrates kept him there. When the boy started turning blue, Socrates raised the boy’s head out of the water. The first thing the boy did was to take a deep breath of air. Socrates asked, “What did you want the most when you were under water?” The boy replied, “Air.” Socrates said, “That is the secret to success. When you want success as badly as you wanted air underwater, you will have it.” There is no other secret. This is called the burning desire.”

Make sure to you get up and take charge of your life now! Do not wait for Christmas or the 1st of January!

Get the work done!

We lift, therefore we are!
